The game mechanics felt really fresh! Skating around and making enemies fall through the ice was such a unique idea, and the smooth skating controls felt great. Having plenty of health also made the game a bit more relaxing to play. The 3D graphics made the skating feel even more immersive, and the character’s sunglasses gave her a lot of personality! The hockey players were surprisingly smart and good at avoiding the circles, so that part was the only real challenge. Overall, it was a great game
Thank you so much!! That’s super kind of you. Glad you enjoyed playing!
Heyyy, I'm back with another round of feedback. Sorry if you're sick of hearing from me. I wanted to log a few more hours to really examine it, and here are my final thoughts on the current version:
- Hockey pucks stick around too long. I'll be moving along the side of the rink and then I'll randomly run into a hockey puck that got stuck and I'll lose a heart. I think they should despawn once they stop moving.
- The difficulty plateaus after a while. I think it happens somewhere between waves 20 and 25? It's easy enough to just leave one enemy alive and then keep grabbing the health pickups before the next batch of combatants joins the rink. At that point, it becomes less about how long you can keep playing for and more about how long you want to keep playing for. I'm not sure what exactly the fix for this would be. Maybe the next batch of enemies should be sent in if the player disengages for too long, or maybe it's as simple as spreading the skates a bit further out over the rink.
- Some of the collision could use a touch-up. The skater will fall through razor-thin gaps in the ice, but zambonis, hockey players, and sharks can have all four wheels/both skates/the entire sled off of the ice and not fall through.
- My pinky hurts. I'd like to be able to use either shift to dash, that way I could switch when I get tired. Right now only left shift seems to work.
- I don't think a full minimap is actually necessary. Adding any more HUD elements would feel too crowded. If I could press a key to zoom the camera out over the rink, that would be enough.
Again, This is a very nice concept. It's a charming premise with intuitive play. It just needs a little bit more polish.
Woah, thank you so much for all that feedback!! Really appreciate you still playing and that will be very helpful for our next update. I’ll just go one by one:
- That’s a great point about hockey players that we didn’t even consider. We can definitely implement that change.
- We had already received feedback to spread out the skates - they were added a little last minute and they definitely do need some locational variety to feel fair. In all honesty though it sounds like you made it further than anyone getting up to Wave 20-25 so that difficulty plateau would have been really hard for us to figure out, haha. We’ll think about some of those other suggestions.
- Completely agreed and I’ve already made a couple adjustments to help. Zambonis and sharks have had their collision boxes reduced since they were accidentally oversized, and I will be taking a look at hockey players and the skater too :)
- Totally doable and good point, I’ll add right shift as an alternate control.
- Yeah we were also leaning that way — it feels like there’s underlying pathfinding problems we could solve that would allow you to still navigate the (fairly small) rink without needing a map to know where enemies are.
Thank you so very much again and I hope you won’t be too tired to play our next update, haha. Take care!!
i luv when skate make loopy in blue. it make me happy wen man fall in blue hehe. and shark go boing and swoosh hehe. i get 80 points and die because black circle hit me, which make me sad, but i play again and be happy hehe
Thank you hehe
Amazing game!
Have had lots of fun playing this, feels like a nice throwback to the days of cartoonnetwork flash. I do think that the puck launchers are a teensy bit busted, though. They have a tendency to just hide along the edges where you physically cannot get around to sink them. Maybe if there were some way of goading them away from the walls, or even just a mini map so you don't have to spend so long hunting them while they pelt you to death, they'd feel a bit more balanced?
Edit: with a bit more practice the puck launchers don't feel so bad anymore. Mostly just wish they weren't too tall to jump over.
Thank you so much!! Yeah we definitely took inspiration from that flash/PS1 era of games here. That’s completely fair and also something we’ve identified in playtesting post-jam — I can definitely agree with you that they’re busted at the moment and only wish we had the foresight to nerf them sooner. You’re also not the first one to suggest a minimap — something for us to definitely think about :)
Thanks so much for playing and for the constructive feedback!
No problem! Another thing is that I connected my dualsense controller, and it works on the title and pause screens, but not during the actual gameplay
Ahh, good catch! Yeah our controller support was added more towards the end and not tested completely. If you don't mind my asking, were you playing on web or in the downloaded version?
Web
Gotcha, thanks! I actually had to flip the Y axis for player movement joystick input specifically on web for our controller support to function, so it’s definitely a little dubious there. Will be doing some more testing post-jam 🫡
I like idea, but I think the enemies push you too much causing you to have to little control sometimes
Fair criticism, thank you! We’ll take note of it for future updates.
